Bit cranky with the heat?

Your not alone. Summer is the season of the heart, and heat agitates our little beater which, in TCM speak, houses the emotions. Nature has provided watermelon to help keep our ticker cool. And wouldn’t you know it, this marries up in scientific research as well! Being lycopene rich this melon is of interest in cardiovascular research. In Chinese Medicine we talk about it’s cooling effect on the heart while balancing our internal thermostat. Watermelon builds fluids, and is a remedy for thirst while it’s diuretic action eliminates excess bodily heat via the urine. Great news if you’ve spent too much time in the sun.
Watermelon balances the Kidney-Heart relationship (ref. 5 elements philosophy). Normally, Kidney water keeps Heart fire in check. If there’s a reversal (Heart fire attacking Kidney water) can result in UTIs, nephritis, urethritis and other urinary concerns. This humble melon can keep yer nethers in tip top condition too.
