Old School Cookery

This is the cover of my mum’s school cookbook, ‘Home Cookery’. Revised in 1960 says the cover page. A cook from a young age, I remember pouring over these pages as a kid, deciding what I’d like to make, which icing with which cake. Pretty basic by current cookbook standards. Modern cooking is a dynamic mix of flavor combinations, ingredients, techniques and textures, but it can be too much all of the time.

One of my fave meals as a kid was when mum plated what we would now call a deconstructed salad – probably at times when she was too exhausted to do anything else. We were so lucky to grow up with a foodie mum, when a foodie was a mother bringing her children up healthy. In a lucky double whammy she also loved to garden…the veggies were picked then plated.

Not gourmet, but still pleasing.

Do you have a favorite meal your mum made? I love to hear what got your foodie juices flowing as a kid…
